9/11/2006 [Simon's Space] Crazy jobCall me a slow learner, but I never learn anything without trying it in some reallife project. That's why I'm very happy with my current job. It's crazy but below are what I've learned during the past 2 months: SVN: It's yet another source control tool for me after SourceSafe, ClearCase(UpperCase), and Peforce. I was curious about CVS and here SVN is! (it's a replacement of CVS.) Ant: Now I'm an advanced ant user that able to write custom tasks. Action Script and Flex: It's powerful for amazing GUI. I must confess I was shocked because I've taken years to learn Java AWT, Swing and SWT. JMeter and The Grinder: web load test has been a mystery to me for a long time. Python: I've tried to learn python for at least 3 times. But this time I can practice something more than "Hello World". Dojo: This is what I've been looking for. A browser transparent toolkit for web client. Seems that I'm not that slow, when it's still interesting to me. But I will try to update my Chinese blog as often.

9.5 million, that means if you put one student per square kilometer, these young guys will occupy entire China.
The exam itself has been changed a lot. This year, recommended candidates also need to take some exam to avoid corruption. I'm a lucky bird in this game, but I don't enjoy it, although it's the only close-to-fair game for most students. Tag: education 2/3/2006 求助帖Thank you all!
I think I don't have to use your resource in this case.
I will contact you in person shortly.

Enjoy the holiday! Wish you a very happy new year!
Tag: misc 12/31/2005 My 1996Today here comes the first snow in Beijing. It takes me back to year 1996.
In 1996, it's also a warm winter; the first snow also came on the last day of the year. In 1996, I made a big decision to take the post graduate study. Had I decided to get a job, I might never know my wife, so that's definitely a right decision. In 1996, the internet went to hot in China. But I just don't know how to get involved. Also in 1996, I was thinking about my future. I didn't know what's lying ahead but I knew it would change my life. And I find I am now in a similar situation as in 1996.
I changed my job. I think wireless and web 2.0 will be the next wave in China. I don't want to miss it. May it be, when darkness falls, the stars will light my way.
Tag: life 12/21/2005 Strategy reviewI'd like to write an entry to review my strategy in Google code jam. I also write this experience in my Chinese blog.
I believe a good strategy is very important to win a game. So after registered in Google code jam, the first thing for me is to find a good strategy.
I tried the sample contest and found:
1. The score and the difficult level might not match. I found the 750 point problem is kind of easy.
2. There are so many competitors. Some competitors are quite impressive. 3. For the sample problems, I might solve any of them within 1 hour, but no way to finish them all in time.
4. The network connection is poor, except morning and middle night.
So I took the Skimming Price Strategy. That means, I will bet on the 2nd problem and give up the 1st one. Because from the practice room summary, I found there is no chance for those who fail the 2nd problem.
It turns out my strategy didn't save me from the qualification round. In fact, it's possible to pass the qualification round by the easier problem. So maybe I should try to first problem when I found myself unable to solve the 2nd problem in time.
Maybe I've made a bad strategy based on inaccuracy data, but anyway, I could fail with any strategy. The important thing is: I wanted to have fun, and I had!
Tag: google 12/13/2005 Mission failedI failed the Google code jam.
I can't find the solution in 1 hour, and I still haven't.
I will solve it later as an exercise. Still a long way to go.
Anyone else enrolled in this game? Can you share with me how bad you are?
Tag: google 11/27/2005 Google code jam!Google is launching a code challenge for Chinese coders. I've enrolled and finished the 3 warming up practices. To my surprise, I found the quiz are very simple. I had thought there would be some tricks, so I designed some tricky test cases to challenge other coders. But Google kept saying "You test case is invalid. Blabla". I read this as "Do not be evil.". :-) Basically, if you submit a correct solution, the faster you submit, the higher score you will get. For the practice, I got 98.09 for the 250 points quiz, 355.70 for the 500 points quiz, and 665.59 for the 1000 points quiz. My score for the 250 points quiz is low mainly because it took me more than 5 hours to submit after I opened the quiz. Actually I only spent about 1 hour on it. So I guess I can reach 60% of Google's expectation. I saw some impressive score on the room summary list. They can get 90% of the total point! I will try to take the formal competition, but I'm afraid of my network connection. Anyway, let's have fun! Tag: google 11/25/2005 Memo for last working dayWarning:
Think twice on you decision. Before searching for outer opportunities, Please discuss with your manager. You can do that because this company is a great company. In case you have make up your mind, below are some tips to save your time.
1. You will receive a letter from HR. Read it carefully and you will find in it several important files: equipment checklist, data preservation certification, etc. 2. During your transfer period, take all your personal items home 3. Complete the first part of equipment checklist, print it for later use. 3. Return the credit card to financial dept. Before that, make sure your account is clean. You can do this in the early phase of your transfer period. You should do the following in your last working day. 5. Send your farewell letter. Leave your contact information in it. 6. Print the data preservation certification and sign it. 7. Return your computer to IS. Before shutting down, make sure no CD in the driver. 8. Return badge and office keys to mail room. But the catch is: you still need to get into office for the last time. 9. Sign the equipment checklist. Give this file and signed data preservation certification to your manager. 10. Say good bye. Tag: job 11/23/2005 New adventureI will leave my current job and join a small company.
Why would I leave? It will give me a chance to get involved in another exciting domain (wireless game).
Instead of explain a lot of things, I think it's a good time to list some important reminders for myself:
1. The brilliant future of the industry doesn't necessary means the brilliant future of me. 2. Work hard, but not at price of family and health. 3. Keep my dream. So I will shift from telecom domain into game domain, from a fortune 500 to a startup, from an expert to a freshman. You can call it restart, reload, rebirth...
But NOT a shutting down!
Tag: job 10/31/2005 Keep your dreamI came across a friend on MSN this Saturday. He is applying a job position in Microsoft. I'm very interesting in this and we discussed the interview questions for a long time.
My friend said that he will quit coding if he failed his application. He also said his original dream is to be a hacker but he felt he was running away from his dream. This made me rather sad.
He has contributed to one of the most famous open source project. After we have discussed the ms interview questions, I know he is still a good developer.
I asked him to reference me if he got the job. And I asked him: keep your dream!
That's also what I asked myself.
Tag: job 10/19/2005 Elegantly waste itIt has been a long time since my last blog. There are great events keep happening but nothing new to me. But I don’t have much time to lose. If I had to, let me waste it elegantly. Let it go, all the pain of desire.
Tag: life 9/12/2005 ReunionI had 2 conflicted invitations last Friday. One was to enjoy karaoke with my colleagues; another was to reunion with my post graduate professor.
The choice is easy: I went to see my professor. Sept 10 is the Teacher's Day in China. Every year this time, former students of my professor will have a reunion party. It's also a good time to refresh latest status of each one.
My professor is still full of energy although he is approaching 70 years old. He is now working in the software college of my university. Every week end, he will fly all over China to give lectures. That means he works on a 7*10 basis. I can see he is a little bit tired, but the college is his last dream of glory so he will never stop.
My professor is also looking for new tutors for the college. He said it was hard because the candidate should have deep understanding in software development and with good oral and written English. The payment is also not competitive while the work is under high pressure.
My professor asks me to give him a call if I'm interested in teaching Software Testing.
I respect my professor as father and I wish I could teach in college one day. But the endless trip is really daunting.

8/29/2005 My teacher, my neighborhoodWhen I was wandering near my condo last Saturday afternoon, I felt somebody was looking at me and smiling. I turned back and found he was my teacher in university. I'm very proud many of my teachers still remember me after years, although they just forget my name. Hey, do you think a handsome face is so easy to forget? Just kidding, I'm not an impressive man in looking. But some of them said I was a "good" student in their mind. For 2 reasons: I don't know how I made this image. I just cleaned the blackboard for them and salute them when we met in the road. I always feel embarrassing if no one in my class will clean the blackboard during the break. (That should be one of my five strange hobbies.) The teacher I met taught me Discrete Mathematics in university. I still remember he challenged my class with an interesting proposition. And I found an elegant way to prove it during my Xmas dinner! I still keep my little prize, a 2nd hand 5.25 inch soft disk! He has bought a condo in the same campus of mine. I should visit him someday. Tag: life teacher 8/15/2005 The 60th anniversary of Anti-Fascist WarI learned from wangjianshuo that we should keep a frequency on blog and don't write more than one blog per day. But I have to write something for the 60th anniversary of Anti-Fascist War. Wish the world peace. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi gave a speech on Aug 15. I personally welcome this speech and hope it can remedy the relationship between Japan and China.

I didn't have the URL but I remembered the article starts with "You must have read at least one blog before you come here". So I googled with the following keywords: wang jianshuo "one blog".
I was shocked by the result. The first item returned is my own blog entry.
P.S. It's very interesting that Mr. Wang also wrote a blog about google in yesterday. 5/12/2005 When I was 25One blog by my friend reminds me my 25. I can't remember if I was such a person: confident as if everything in control, while frustrated as doesn't know where to go. Did I feel uncertain for the future when I'm 25? Maybe not, the only uncertain issue was cleared when I met my wife before that. <g> Yes, I must confess when I have a pity for my 25. I announced I will be able to make a cross on the rings before 25. (looks like o-|-o ). But I only managed to lift myself on the rings. (looks like o|o , hand sticked to body). That one of the few goals I never made. Still a long way to go... |
