    First decision

My baby girl made her first big decision last night. She chose one first name for herself.

It's not easy to name a baby. With help from my friends and classical Chinese literature, I finally came up with several proposals. But it's really hard to make the final decision.

I think it's important to let my baby involved. So I wrote a simple java application. It will display all candidates quickly and repeatedly. I put her left foot on keyboard. My baby "think" a while and kicked. Alas! The name scrolling stopped and she picked her name by herself!

I hope she will be pride of this when she grows up.

    To be a father

Dear God, my ancient parents, the unknown future,
Please, bring me a healthy angel, and keep my wife safe.

    Nothing new

    - How are you recently?
    - Nothing new.
That's a typical conversation between my friends and me.

    It can't be true.
We just keep forgetting little joys and pities.

Every night I will ask my wife to tell me something new about my unborn baby. In most cases, she will give me a "nothing new" answer. But it turns out there is always something new, every single day!

This happened again last night. My wife insisted "there is nothing new" for half an hour, and suddenly, something came up to her mind:
The baby doesn't kick me as often as usual. It only pushes me by hands. So this afternoon I put my hand near its legs and said "Baby, kick here!" So it did! We played the games twice. Then it's tired and refused to go on.

What a sweet story, how could she just forget that?

    I missed the snow

When we were sitting around the breakfast table, my inlaws told me that there had been a snow this morning. This is very special in Beijing this season. I looked out the window but only see a shining sun.
It seems that we've missed many events while we are sleeping.

We become more and more systemlized and predicable while we are growing up. Getting up at the same time, taking the same bus to office, doing the same job... Some people call it a simple life, while some call it "boring and tedious".

Why not try something different? Getting up earlier, changing your way home, going to somewhere new... Change your life track a little bit, and you will find a whole new world.

    Update:
It snows again, so I don't miss the snow, and I don't miss the lesson. :-)

New year gift for my wife

My wife is a talent hardware engineer. She always gets her assignments done quickly so her boss assign her some stuff works.

Basically, all the team members will send her some case numbers. Then my wife has to go to a web site, retrieve data and fill in an excel document. The catch is: she has to query the cases one by one and pick the data from place to place. That makes whole thing rather trivial.

I wrote a little tool in my new year holidays. It will open an excel file, get case numbers from certain column, fetch the web page content related to this case number, retrieve data from that web page and fill them back in this excel file.

So from this week on, my wife will simply fill the case numbers in excel file and double click her secret tool. That will save her at least 2 hours per week.

That's enough for a tea break each day.

    The 7th night

In Chinese lunar calendar, today is the 7th day of the 7th month. In well known legend, tonight is the reunion time for 2 faithful lovers. In tradition, Chinese people call tonight as "The 7th night", and some people call it as "Chinese Saint Valentine's Day".

It a beautiful legend, I suggest all people in love to should have a romantic night.
And some people go even further. According to the news, some people of great influence are making proposal to make it as a legal holiday.

I am a little bit confused. IMHO, people began to celebrate on "the 7th night" only 3 to 5 years ago. In older tradition, The 7th Night is a night for girls to pray for better sewing and knit skills. Is it so important to Chinese people?

I know some more important traditional Chinese festivals are Middle Autumn Day (for family reunion) and Qingmin (in commemoration of the ancestor).
I also know Chongyang (To avoid evil and miss traveling relatives) and Duanwu (in commemoration of a patriot and poet) are very important to many people.

But none of them are legal holiday. Chinese people have 10 legal holiday in one year, that's very little comparing with some other countries.

Okay, it's too boring to discuss legal issue in such a night. Ladies and gentlemen, just enjoy your night!

P.S. Below is my conversation with my wife on the phone.
Husband: Darling, tonight is the 7th night.
    Wife: So what?
H: Maybe I can quit my training after work and go home with you!
    W: Forget it!
H: Great minds think alike. I'm asking just in case!

    Hmm, two dull people!

    The butterfly

My friend sent me a French song today. I love it so much that I translated it into English. The song is from a movie “Le papillon” (The butterfly). It has been added to my “must watch” movie list.

    Below is the lyrics:

    ============
(Lisa: ) Why hens born eggs?

(Julien: ) For all eggs turn to chicken.

(Lisa: ) Why loving people kiss?

(Julien: ) For pigeons will coo coo.

(Lisa: ) Why beautiful flowers fade?

(Julien: ) For it's part of the charm.

(Lisa: ) Why there are Devil and God?

(Julien: ) For the curious people to discuss.

(Lisa: ) Why wood burn in fire?

(Julien: ) To let us warm as blanket.

(Lisa: ) Why sea ebbs away?

(Julien: ) For people to ask "Encore".

    (Lisa: ) Why sun descends?

(Julien: ) To decorate the other side of earth.

(Lisa: ) Why there are Devil and God?

(Julien: ) For the curious people to discuss.

(Lisa: ) Why wolves eat lambs?

(Julien: ) For they also need to eat.

(Lisa: ) Why it's tortoise to race with rabbit?

(Julien: ) For we can't just run.

(Lisa: ) Why angels have wings?

(Julien: ) For us to believe Santa exists.

(Lisa: ) Why there are Devil and God?

(Julien: ) For the curious people to discuss.

    ============
(Julien: ) You love the travel?

    (Lisa: ) Oh of course!

(Julien: ) Haven't we seen so many beautiful things?

(Lisa: ) I wish I had seen the crickets!

    (Julien: ) Why crickets?

    (Lisa: ) And dragonfly!

(Julien: ) Maybe next time, okay?

    (Lisa: ) Okay.

(Lisa: ) Can I ask you something?

    (Julien: ) What again?

(Lisa: ) We continue but it's your turn to sing!

    (Julien: ) No way!

    (Lisa: ) Please!

(Julien: ) No, no, not possible...

(Lisa: ) Come on, it's the last part!

(Julien: ) Aren't you kinda of greedy, Uh-hum?

    ============
(Julien: ) Why our hearts tic-tac?

(Lisa: ) For the rain dingdong.

(Julien: ) Why time flies so fast?

(Lisa: ) It's gone with the wind.

(Julien: ) Why do you want to hold my hand?

(Lisa: ) For it 's so comfortable to be with you

(Julien: ) Why there are Devil and God?

(Lisa: ) For the curious people to discuss

Popcorn, cold jelly, and box food

I really doubt whether this entry should be written in English. Actually it's really fun in Chinese.

The hottest TV show this summer is definitely the "Supper Girl" (Chao Ji Nv Sheng, A copy of America Idol), although not everyone likes it.
Now the top 10 girl are competing for the final crown, 3 of them are from Chendu Division, they are Li Yv Chun, Zhang Liang Yin, and He Jie. These 3 girls are very promising and their biggest competitor is the girl from Guangzhou division named Zhou Bi Chang.

The girls have won a lot of fans. I found some fans are really amazing.
They call themselves "yv mi", "liang fen", and "herv fan". If we translate the words directly into English, these will be 3 kind of food: "popcorn", "cold jelly", and "box food".

Let me explain the interesting part:
"Yv mi (popcorn)": "yv" is a homophone to the middle name of Li Yv Chun and "mi" has a homophone in Chinese means fans.
"Liang fen (cold jelly)": "liang" is a homophone to the middle name of Zhang Liang Ying and "fen" is one popular way Chinese read fans.
"Herv fan (box food)": "herv" is a homophone to the last name of He Jie and "fan" is just for fans.

Even more interesting, they call the fans of Zhou Bi Chang as "zong zi", which is also a famous Chinese food.

The most fanny part is one of the fans suggests all fans of the 3 Chendu girls should call themselves "Ye Er Ba (leaf cake)" which is a famous Chendu local food.
    Why?
Because "Ye Er Ba" reads similar to "128" in Chinese, and 1, 2, 8 are the code of the 3 girls in the final competition!

I must confess food is one of the most important cultures in China.

    Here comes Zhang Ziyi

Just when I left office yesterday, I came across several exciting colleagues. "Go, go, go!" them seems so eager to witness a miracle.
    "What's up?" I stopped asked.
    "Oh, here comes Zhang Ziyi!"
"Good." I said politely and returned to my way, pick up my bicycle, and ride home.
Wind breezed over my hair, what a sunny spring afternoon!
